Health Worker's at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry held a lunchtime solidarity action against recent racist attacks across the North upon migrant workers. The event was organised by a number of unions within the hospital and attended by over one hundred members of staff.
A spokesperson for the IWW Derry Branch, who took part in the action, said afterwards that "This was an action that had been arranged short notice. I would pay tribute to the organisers and everyone who came out in numbers, as it shows the rage that people feel towards those who seek to divide workers.
"Speaking to fellow workers, there is a unifying voice saying that it is unacceptable that migrant workers, their homes, and relatives have been targeted this week.
"As a union, we welcome today's action with public sector workers and with migrant workers against hate and division. We should encourage more similar mobilisations against any further attacks and any attempts to target or divide workers in the weeks ahead.
"Speaking to several at today's protest, we've listened to and heard many stories. Horror stories of how workers and their families locally have been afraid to even go to the shops or to travel on public transport. This is totally unacceptable. The message from this action today and our call to every worker must always be that an injury to one is an injury to all!"
