Community United Against Hate

Members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) took part in an anti-racist counter demonstration in Belfast earlier today, against orchestrated far-right actions across both islands.

In Belfast, noted far-right supporters from parts of Dublin joined forces with loyalists outside Belfast City Hall, flying Irish tricolours alongside British Union flags. Their chorus of hate chants in favour of 'Tommy Robinson' were drowned out by the legendary IWW folk song 'Solidarity Forever'.

As counter protests got underway, community, trade unionists and non-aligned activists overwhelmingly outnumbered those who gathered attempting to spread islamphobic and anti migrant hate messages.

At several times throughout the action, fireworks were indiscriminately fired at counter protesters, as each speaker from the platform condemned growing attacks on migrant workers homes and workplaces throughout the north.

A representative from the IWW Ireland Branch, at today's counter demonstration said that: "The IWW have taken part in anti-racist actions over the years, and today it is great to see we are here in larger numbers. It's a fantastic turnout, as it sends a message to those who seek to divide our class, our communities or our workplaces. Together we are stronger.

"Belfast is a welcoming city, we are a welcoming people and we are strengthened by our diversity. I think our message has been heard loud and clear. We will not allow our streets to be held by those who sow racism and sectarianism.

"Our enemies are the politicians and the bosses who are seek to profit or benefit when our class is divided or un-unionised. To those in our workplaces, in our communities or even our homes. We will not allow or tolerate your hate to divide us. We say, know the real enemy!"

As crowds dispersed, news came of further far-right attacks upon cars and shops in South Belfast. Several hundred members of the Lower Ormeau road community prevented racist gangs from attacking a local mosque.
