IWW Report on Belfast Counter Demonstration

On Saturday the 3rd of August, in Belfast, the IWW was proud to turn out with other trade unions, antifascists, and community activists of every kind, in order to counter a proposed march by the far right.

The extremists aims were nakedly racist, at their counter demonstration, there were people convicted of sectarian murders and known neo-nazis. They gave Hitler salutes, referred to LGBTQ+ people as "paedophiles" and shouted for Muslim people to be kicked out.

They also directed fireworks into the crowd, threw all manner of missiles, and aimed to cause harm. Comically, they set out for the Islamic centre and got lost. On the way, they left a trail of wanton destruction in their wake - attacking businesses and shops they believed were associated with the Islamic community and "migrants".

Their malicious intent for our communities is extremely clear.

We are heartened by the variety and amount of people both here and in cities across Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales who are standing up to these people, resisting exploitation by grifters and those who stand to gain from the worst kind of social situations imaginable.

The only solution now is to build community and networks of resistance. We will not let our siblings in the communities targeted by the far right around the world, face this aggression on their own. We also call on the working class to wake up to this shameful attempt to exploit and profit from them, and stand united against hatred.
