As we mark the 88th anniversary of the Spanish Revolution the IWW Ireland Branch will continue our online educational events to mark the occasion.
Two days after the fascist General Franco's coup against the elected leftist government, the uprising began on 19th July 1936, when the people took up arms to defend the Republic.
Spain represented for many at that time both the hope of defeating fascism and of building a new, free society.
This hope led almost 60,000 internationalists to leave everything behind and join the international brigades, including members of the Industrial Workers of the World who took up the call of the revolution.
In the anti-fascist areas and especially in Catalonia, a self-government was formed, driven by anarchist and communist ideas.
Despite the joint struggle against fascism and shared values, there was friction between the different revolutionary movements, which eventually led to Franco's victory in 1939 together with an embargo against the resistant areas.
Through our discussion, we will look at the 'Lessons from the Spanish Revolution' which we hope you will join us. It will take place online on Thursday 1st August at 19:30 IST/GMT.
Full details and link will be issued to all members and supporters shortly. Please check emails (Junk/Spam boxes).
